Emergency Room

Kerry Weaver,
Resident Lesbian

The Show

Emergency Room. Hospital drama, USA; since 1994 on NBC.

Introduction

According to Laura Innes (Kerry), who played an important role in casting Elizabeth Mitchell, they wanted "America to fall in love" with Kerry's new love interest, Dr. Kim Legaspi. And many people did! (Innes about EM: "All the girls loooved her!") The chemistry between the two was remarkable. Mitchell was supposed to return for season 8; why she did not, was the topic of much speculation. Probably only TPTB and Elizabeth Mitchell know.

For her new love interest, tptb conveniently casted an actress who was busy with her main show, Third Watch. Kerry's relationship faded into the background (and what we got to see was marked by absurd leaps) until they killed her off.

On the bright side, they didn't re-heterosexualize Kerry; a little detail that Laura Innes had insisted on before agreeing to the lesbian storyline.

The Stories

Kerry & Sandy (seasons 8-10, 2002-2003)
Kim & Kerry (season 7: 2000/2001)
Maggie Doyle

The Heroines

Bianca

Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes; regular character). Nicknames: Alpha Bitch Attending, NaziDyke. Fan nicks: La Weaver (her crutch: Green Destiny).

Bianca

Dr. Kim Legaspi, psychiatrist, goddess (ok, that's just me). Her voice ... sorry, I digress. An out & proud lesbian. Indispensable accessory: her clipboard. Still in our hearts... and secretly, in Kerry's. The writers just don't know it yet! DAMMIT!

Sandy

Sandy Lopez (Lisa Vidal), firefighter. Most notable traits are her knack of knowing what is best for Kerry and her progressive invisibility (TWOP nick: "Invisidyke"). Likes doing favors.

Maggie

Dr. Maggie Doyle (Jorja Fox, now with CSI). The first lesbian ER staffer, sadly, never had a prominent storyline. She usually served to further Carter's. We get to know her as the gun-savvy daughter of a police officer and as an outspoken lesbian/ feminist activist.

Trivia

Laura Innes has directed several episodes of ER and The West Wing; she was even nominated for an Emmy for one of her TWW episodes.

In 2003, Elizabeth Mitchell was co-starring with Rob Lowe in the lawywer drama Lyon's Den, which lasted only one season.
