The Show |
Bad Girls, UK, since 1999, channel:
ITV. In its first 2-3 seasons, the show about a women's prison was a realistic, thrilling drama taking a political stance for imprisoned women. It was also the first mainstream series to feature two women who fell in love with each other as the main heroines! Despite BG being a strong ensemble show, Nikki and Helen's saga of two soul mates on opposite sides of the fence (with both actually fighting for the 'good cause') was a vital part of it. The series has featured more bisexual and lesbian characters, if not as prominently as Nikki and Helen. Still, Bad Girls remains a landmark in the depiction of love between women on tv. |

The
Heroines |
Kris Yates (Jennifer Ness): The cab driver is serving a life sentence for stabbing her own father. But has she really committed the crime? Kris' tough, rebellious attitude makes her an instant target of Evil Fenner. |
![]() |
Selena Geeson (Charlotte Lucas): A former fitness trainer and a bit of a flirt, she joins the staff as a Basic Officer to be close to her convicted lover, Kris. She, too, catches Fenner's eye, although for vastly different reasons. |

Series 1 to 3: |

![]() |
Nikki Wade (Mandana Jones), 34, lesbian, co-owning a club with her partner of nine years, Trisha. She is serving a life sentence for killing the policeman who tried to rape her girlfriend. Hard on the outside, Nikki is really such a softy! Loyal and helpful towards her fellow inmates, she deeply distrusts the prison officers and has the reputation of being a troublemaker. |
![]() |
Helen Stewart (Simone Lahbib), 30, totally straight, is the new Wing Governor at Larkhall. Determined to improve the lives of the prisoners against all odds (like the phlegmatism and corruption of her staff), she sometimes goes about it all wrong. Has quite a temper and is easily angered. Scottish accent (verrry sexy). Her boyfriend Sean moved in with her only recently. |
Youngsters Denny
Blood (Alycia Eyo) and Shaz Wylie (Lindsey
Fawcett), both apparently lesbians, first meet in
Larkhall. Denny is a bully and Evil Shell's most
loyal henchwoman (they share a physical relationship,
too). Shaz has accidentally poisoned three people and
got a life sentence for triple murder. |
Others Series 5/ 6: |
Frances Myers (Eva Pope), a former undercover cop with the vice squad, now the new wing governor. She entered with a bang, so to speak, and refers to herself as "one bastard screw". Her past is murky and her methods are questionable. Likes S/M and sex in the workplace. Hates inmate Natalie Buxton. My favorite quote: "You're all sacked!" |
Phyl (Stephanie Beecham) and Bev (Amanda Barrie), known as "The Costa Cons," are conning their fellow inmates and prison officers. Bev becomes addicted to heroin. Amanda Barrie is out as a lesbian. |
Series 1 to 6: |
Julie Johnston (Kika Mirylees) and Julie Saunders (Victoria Alcock) share their cell and (platonically) their lives, which is why they are called "The two Julies" The eccentric ladies used to be prostitutes. |
Jim Fenner (Jack Ellis), married, two kids, is the First Officer on G-Wing. Misogynist, homophobic, unscrupulous, he abuses prisoners and is the natural enemy of our heroines. |
Sylvia Hollamby (Helen Fraser), called "Bodybag" (an endearment first used by Zandra), is lazy, larmoyant, bigoted, and feels that the prisoners are treated too well in Larkhall. |
